Job Summary
Production Technician on the production floor handling hazardous materials and operating complex equipment used in explosives production. Responsibilities include preparing solutions, mixtures, and raw materials for energetic material synthesis or formulation; monitoring synthesis processes via remote cameras, computer systems, sensors, and process control equipment; performing processing techniques (mixing, drying, granulating, pressing, extrusion) for explosives; handling, weighing, measuring, and transporting explosive materials between production areas; assembling, loading, or packing explosives into components according to specifications; conducting in-process testing and quality checks with moisture balances, pH meters, scales, and other analytical tools; inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining equipment and work areas to prevent contamination or hazards; documenting production batches, material usage, inventory, and deviations in compliance with federal/state regulations; following safety protocols (PPE, grounding, static control, quantity-distance rules); participating in safety audits and continuous improvement initiatives related to explosives handling and manufacturing; assisting with material receiving, storage, and shipping of finished energetic products under regulated conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED; associate degree or technical certification in chemistry, process technology, manufacturing, or related field (preferred).
- Experience: 1–3+ years in chemical manufacturing, hazardous materials handling, or explosives/energetics production.
- Certifications: ATF Explosives Handler or User Permit eligibility (background check and fingerprinting required); Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) training and certification; OSHA safety training (e.g., 30-hour Construction/General Industry) or equivalent explosives safety courses.
- Technical Skills: Read and follow detailed manufacturing procedures, batch records, and technical drawings; proficiency with scales, mixers, dryers, pH meters, basic lab/process equipment; basic computer skills for process monitoring and documentation.
- Physical/Other: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; stand for extended periods; pass background checks, drug screening, and medical evaluations; willingness to work shifts including overtime or on-call.
