Job Summary
Production Editor at Union Square Kids oversees the production editorial process for 50 titles per year from manuscript to bound book, including paperback and other format conversions. Works with Editorial, Design, and Production to monitor schedules and resolve issues; hires and supervises freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers; reviews and routes copyedited manuscripts in MS Word, reconciles author markup, and coordinates corrections across manuscript stages; styles electronic manuscripts in Word for copyediting; copyedits and proofs jacket and cover materials; attends interdepartmental meetings. Requires 3+ years in trade publishing, strong copyediting/proofreading, Chicago Manual of Style knowledge, MS Word proficiency, and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Hybrid position based in New York City.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in trade publishing and with children’s books
- Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
- Thorough knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style (18th Ed.)
- Strong MS Word skills and knowledge of electronic copyediting and PDF markup
- Knowledge of electronic styling is a plus
- Superior organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Must be detail- and accuracy-oriented, and have the ability to balance many projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
