Job Summary

Product Software Engineer II responsible for building and supporting backend services and APIs powering ESPN watch experiences across platforms. You will implement features and defects in backend systems, contribute to testing, deployment, and maintenance of scalable services, analyze distributed systems and high-throughput APIs, participate in code reviews, collaborate with product managers and multiple engineering teams, support live sporting events with reliability and observability, participate in on-call rotations, contribute to sprint planning and technical design, and explore emerging technologies including AI-assisted development to improve productivity and platform capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field - or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience developing backend systems or APIs in Java (Spring Boot preferred)
  • Familiarity with cloud-native development, particularly in AWS (ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, S3, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability stacks (DataDog, New Relic, CloudWatch)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, build systems (e.g., TeamCity, Jenkins), and containerized deployments
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, caching strategies, and performance optimization
  • Comfortable working in high-stakes environments with live event traffic and tight SLAs
  • Drive adoption of agentic AI development workflows, using tools like Cursor and Claude Code
  • Participation in on-call rotations and major event coverage
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Experience with agile methodologies and software development lifecycle
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and high-availability environments
  • Experience with frontend development exposure (preferred) and edge caching strategies (preferred)
  • Exposure to media/streaming workflows (preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Experience mentoring or contributing to team growth
