Job Summary
Product Software Engineer II responsible for building and supporting the backend services and APIs powering ESPN watch experiences across platforms. You will implement features and fix defects in scalable backend systems, contribute to development, testing, deployment, and maintenance, analyze distributed systems and high-throughput APIs, participate in code reviews, collaborate with product and platform teams, and support live sports/streaming platforms with reliability and observability. The role includes on-call rotations, technical design discussions, sprint planning, and exploring emerging technologies and AI-assisted workflows to improve developer productivity. Requires a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and 3+ years of backend Java experience (Spring Boot preferred), cloud-native AWS familiarity, monitoring/observability tooling, CI/CD experience, REST APIs and caching optimization, and strong collaboration skills. Salary ranges reflect multiple locations (Bristol, CT; Seattle, WA; Glendale, CA) with potential bonuses and benefits; base pay will vary by region and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field - or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of experience developing backend systems or APIs in Java (Spring Boot preferred)
- Familiarity with cloud-native development, particularly AWS (ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, S3, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability stacks (DataDog, New Relic, CloudWatch)
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, build systems (e.g., TeamCity, Jenkins), and containerized deployments
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, caching strategies, and performance optimization
- Comfortable working in high-stakes environments with live event traffic and tight SLAs
- Experience leveraging AI development tools to accelerate workflows
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation and major event coverage
