Job Summary
Product Software Engineer II needed to join Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology's Media Security team within the Playback Services, Media Engineering organization. Responsibilities include writing code and tests for backend services, contributing to specifications and architecture discussions, maintaining software lifecycle and documentation, and participating in on-call rotations. Collaboration across teams to deliver features and resolve issues in a high-performance, scalable backend environment supporting streaming, rights management, antipiracy tech, and playback services. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in CS/SE/EE or related field, 3+ years delivering backend applications, proficiency with JVM/Scala, RESTful services, async programming, cloud exposure (AWS/Azure/GCP), CI/CD, Git, Docker, messaging (Kafka/Kinesis/SQS), and observability tools (Datadog/Splunk/Grafana). Strong problem-solving, communication, and eagerness to learn are valued. Salary ranges: Santa Monica, CA $117.5k-$157.5k; New York, NY $123k-$165k; compensation may vary by location and experience. The role is Full-time with on-site responsibilities at the specified locations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 3 years related experience delivering backend applications in a production environment
- Familiarity with operating high-availability backend services and JVM services
- Working knowledge of functional programming patterns and experience contributing to RESTful services (Scala APIs)
- Familiarity with async programming models (events, callbacks, promises, async/await) and threading/concurrency
- Understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, databases, etc.) and developing knowledge of design patterns and principles
- Exposure to a Public Cloud Provider (e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
- Understanding of source control concepts and systems, CI/CD pipelines and exposure to Git
- Familiarity with build and deployment technologies such as Jenkins and Docker.
- Exposure to messaging technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, etc.)
- Familiarity with observability tools for metrics, logging, and monitoring (e.g., Datadog, Splunk, Grafana)
- Awareness of caching technologies
- Knowledge of AGILE/Scrum practices
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Eager to learn, developing problem-solving skills with a collaborative mindset
