Job Summary
Product Policy Manager specializing in Biosecurity to guide OpenAI’s biology-related policy for AI capabilities. You will translate complex biological risk into practical product requirements, launch guidance, enforcement standards, and reviewer procedures, shaping how OpenAI enables legitimate life sciences work while deterring misuse. The role requires collaborating across product, engineering, research, safety, legal, and operations teams to define scalable policy frameworks, access controls, threat models, and escalation paths for high-risk biological use cases, and to align governance with responsible AI deployment. Candidates should bring deep domain knowledge in biosecurity or life sciences and strong communication skills to manage policy in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment and to engage with external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in biosecurity, biosafety, life sciences R&D, synthetic biology, molecular biology, computational biology, public health, biodefense, or biological risk management, plus product policy, trust and safety, abuse investigations, or related fields.
- Strong technical fluency in one or more biological or biosecurity domains (e.g., synthetic biology, molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, protein engineering, lab automation, pathogen surveillance, sequence screening, institutional biosafety, biological threat assessment, life sciences governance).
- Experience turning complex technical or scientific risk into durable rules, standards, processes, or decisions.
- Ability to communicate clearly with product managers, engineers, researchers, executives, safety experts, security practitioners, life sciences customers, and policy stakeholders.
- Ability to evaluate dual-use biological capabilities and distinguish legitimate research from misuse risk.
- Willingness to operate in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment and develop practical policy frameworks, access criteria, taxonomies, and launch guidance.
