Job Summary
Product Developer leads end-to-end development for food-to-go categories (sandwiches, hot food, bakery, snacking, drinks), translating trends and consumer insights into compelling briefs and range proposals. Manages full development cycle from brief to listing, including supplier briefing, tasting, costing, and launch. Drive innovation aligned with seasonal calendars and NPD windows; identify gaps and present ideas to trading and buying stakeholders. Act as day-to-day development lead for defined supplier partners; brief suppliers clearly while balancing quality with margins. Build relationships with suppliers through site visits and kitchen sessions; collaborate with buying, quality, operations, and marketing to ensure timely delivery. Support sourcing, supplier reviews, and tender processes; ensure products meet allergen, labeling, and nutritional standards; resolve quality issues with technical teams and maintain up-to-date specs and development trackers. Ensure compliance with UK food legislation and company policies; develop products with cost of goods and target margin in mind; contribute to range reviews with data and consumer feedback. Manage packaging briefs end-to-end and recipe creation in relevant systems, coordinating with operations. Required Qualifications
- Proven product development experience within food-to-go, travel retail, convenience, or a major UK multiple retailer
- Strong track record of taking products from brief to launch across multiple categories
- Experience managing supplier relationships and leading briefing and development sessions
- Solid understanding of food safety, allergen legislation, and UK labelling requirements
- Commercially literate – able to cost products, model margins, and make sound trade-off decisions
- Excellent palate and genuine passion for food – you eat widely, follow trends, and have strong opinions about what good looks like
