Job Summary
Develop and maintain real-time PREEMPT-RT Linux-based software for automated electromechanical systems, designing interfaces between embedded firmware, DSPs, sensors, and higher-level application software. Build system services, drivers, and middleware supporting deterministic motion and machine control over industrial fieldbus protocols like EtherCAT, while integrating control platforms with machine-vision and operator HMIs. Collaborate with firmware, hardware, and systems engineers to drive product architecture, feasibility studies, and engineering verification, ensuring reliable field-ready products through coordinated testing and deployment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
- Three (3) or more years' experience in C/C++ software development for embedded systems and real-time operating systems such as PREEMPT-RT Linux
- Three (3) or more years' experience with multithreaded and concurrent software design, including inter-process communication and complex hardware/software debugging
- Three (3) or more years' experience using source control and modern software development tools
- Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
- This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Austin, TX
- Travel: May include up to 15% domestic or international
- Relocation: May be authorized

Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution
- Experience with DSP integration, signal processing, or machine control systems
- Experience developing device drivers or middleware
- Experience with Python scripting and automation
- Familiarity with industrial fieldbus / communication protocols (EtherCAT — e.g. IgH/SOEM master, CANopen, Modbus, TCP/IP)
- Experience with motion/servo control, torque motors, or encoder feedback interfaces
- Experience integrating machine-vision cameras, image pipelines, and OpenCV
