Job Summary
Process Engineer at Freeform to develop and optimize metal additive manufacturing processes for advanced 3D printing systems. Responsibilities include analyzing in-situ data to understand physical mechanisms, driving experiments, performing post-build metrology (tensile strength, surface roughness, alloy microstructure), generating and tracking quality metrics for printed parts (dimensional accuracy, defect distribution, surface roughness), developing and implementing tool qualification procedures, and collaborating with mechanical, software, and simulations engineers to rapidly improve printing processes. Requirements include an advanced degree (MS/PhD) in material science, physics, or related engineering, strong fundamentals in physics, experience with experimental design and large-data analysis, and proficiency with Python and/or MATLAB and statistical software. Nice-to-have items include hands-on experience in material science/mechanical engineering, experience with process development in semiconductor/solar/display industries, and familiarity with metallurgical sample prep. Location is Hawthorne/El Segundo, CA with a five-day onsite expectation; relocation assistance provided and a salary range of $95,000-$140,000 depending on experience.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in material science, physics, or similar engineering discipline
- Experience with experimental design
- Strong data analysis skills and ability to interpret large data sets
- Experience with Python and/or MATLAB
- Experience with statistical data analysis software such as R, JMP, or Minitab
- Familiarity with metallurgical sample preparation such as cutting, grinding, polishing, acid etching, and optical microscopy
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
