Job Summary
The Probation Officer I position is responsible for supervising offenders on probation and ensuring compliance with court orders. Key responsibilities include assessing offenders' risk levels, documenting interactions, facilitating community services, and representing the department in court. Candidates should possess strong communication skills, knowledge of probation/parole practices, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. A bachelor's degree in behavioral or social science, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid driver's license are required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. certification
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 18 credits in behavioral or social science
- Valid state-issued driver’s license
- Proof of auto insurance
- Access to a vehicle for employment purposes
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to converse in Spanish (preferred for those with a Spanish-speaking caseload)
- Skill in the operation of computer software applications (preferred)
Additional Requirements
- Candidates must undergo a psychological evaluation to determine fitness to carry a firearm prior to a formal job offer
- Probation/Parole officers hired after July 1, 2005, must obtain certification to carry a firearm within eighteen months of hire
