Job Summary
Assess and reassess the nursing needs of terminally ill hospice patients, providing dietary counseling, symptom management, and preventive procedures. Initiate appropriate nursing procedures, observe signs and symptoms, and report unexpected changes to physicians and IDG members. Teach, supervise, and counsel patients and families on care provision while developing and re-evaluating care plans with the interdisciplinary team. Maintain records, comply with infection control policies, and safeguard patient information per HIPAA regulations. Participate in on-call coverage, attend team conferences, and assist with orientation and training as requested. Requires considerable physical effort including lifting 100-pound patients and tolerance of exposure to body fluids and odors.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Currently licensed as a registered nurse to practice in the state
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a registered nurse
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to make accurate, and at times, quick judgments
- Ability to supervise others appropriately
- Ability to respond appropriately to the crisis outside of a hospital setting
- Acceptance of and adaptability to different social, racial, cultural, and religious modes
- Completes Hospice training program
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be able to make judgments based on assessments and data available
- Must be able to act accordingly
- Must be flexible
- Must be innovative
- Must possess good interpersonal skills
- Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress
- Must demonstrate emotional stability
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to elements including, but not limited to, odors, blood, body fluids and excrements, adverse environmental conditions and hazardous materials
- Must have a current valid driver's license
- Must have auto liability insurance
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must provide evidence of annual TB test
- Must provide evidence of other state-required tests or examinations
- Must possess sight/hearing senses or use appropriate adaptive devices that will enable senses to function at a level required to meet the essential duties of the position
- Must be able to attend all required meetings
Desired Qualifications
- 2 years of experience as a registered nurse, preferred
- Active patient contact within the past three years preferred
