Job Summary

Provide direct and indirect patient care under the guidance of a registered nurse, implementing components of the plan of care for basic human, mental health, and social needs. Assist patients with activities of daily living, personal care, nutrition, and elimination, while performing treatment procedures such as applying therapeutic heat or ice. Measure vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height, weight, and intake/output, and collect specimens for laboratory transport. Monitor blood glucose levels, transport patients to radiology or surgery, and maintain a clean environment by cleaning equipment and reporting out-of-order items. Answer telephone and call systems, greet visitors, and route information to appropriate personnel. Demonstrate competency in pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric care norms, including suction techniques and safety precautions for injury prevention. Float to other areas as assigned, attend staff meetings, and complete annual competency assignments.

Required Qualifications

  • GED or High School Diploma required or current high school student in pursuit of GED to be obtained within one calendar year
  • BLS required
  • Knowledge of principles of patient hygiene, comfort, and safety measures
  • Must be able to see with corrective eyewear if needed
  • Color Vision ability required
  • Must be able to hear clearly with assistance if needed
  • Lifting - 0 -50 lbs, 50 or more with assistance
  • Carrying - 0- 50 lbs, 50 or more with assistance
  • Pulling - Up to 200 lbs
  • Pushing - Up to 200 lbs
  • Direct exposure to body fluids
  • Demonstrates knowledge of pediatric growth and development norms and appropriately addresses abnormal findings
  • Demonstrates competency and knowledge of age-appropriate equipment
  • Demonstrates appropriate suction technique using bulb syringe in the infant and toddler patient
  • Demonstrates appropriate awareness of suspected abuse/neglect to pediatric patients and takes measures to report them according to protocol
  • Identifies and plans for appropriate safety precautions to be taken to prevent injury to the pediatric patient
  • Takes vital signs at appropriate sites
  • Is familiar with location and use of pediatric emergency equipment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adolescent growth and development norms and appropriately addresses abnormal growth
  • Identifies and plans for appropriate safety precautions to be taken to prevent injury to the adolescent patient
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the normal aging process
  • Demonstrates competency and knowledge in the identification of sensorium changes
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
  • Performs treatment procedures under the direction of the registered nurse, such as application of the therapeutic heat/ice
  • Measures temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height/weight, and intake and output and reports abnormal values to assigned nurse
  • Collects specimens of stool, urine, and sputum and transports to lab in a timely manner
  • Ability to perform bedside blood glucose monitoring with the Accu-Chek Inform II
  • Assists with care such as position, lifting, and transferring patients with proper body mechanisms and ambulating patients as directed by the assigned nurse
  • Transports patients as needed, such as to radiology, surgery, or another nursing unit
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment by leaving patient rooms in order, by reporting equipment that is out of order, and by cleaning equipment as needed
  • Answers telephone, call system, and greets visitors professionally, and routes information received to the appropriate personnel
  • Promotes confidentiality and uses complete discretion when discussing information
  • Floats to other areas assigned, responds to floating requests with a positive attitude

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification indicating successful completion of a Nurse's Aide/Technician training and competency course preferred
  • Previous experience as a patient care provider helpful
