Job Summary
Principal Systems Engineer for a next-generation trapped-ion quantum computer based in Broomfield, CO. Responsible for guiding the system lifecycle from concept through design, development, validation, and product release; develops, defines, and manages system requirements and engineering documentation; creates and executes the System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP); defines interfaces between subsystems and writes interface control documents (ICDs); collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop appropriate tools, change-management processes, version control, and architecture documentation; defines and communicates requirements for each subsystem; conducts design trade studies; tracks risk assessments and mitigation; organizes system design reviews; communicates complex technical concepts to stakeholders; mentors junior engineers; requires a Bachelor's degree minimum, 10+ years in systems engineering/hardware design, and 2+ years in a systems engineering role; must be a U.S. Person per security constraints; preferred advanced degrees in Physics or Engineering and MBSE experience, with hands-on experience in quantum computing hardware, laser/optical systems, and cryogenic environments; strong programming and software tool proficiency (Python, MATLAB, C++).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree minimum
- 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, hardware design, system integration, or scientific R&D (including PhD or post-doctoral experience)
- 2+ years in a systems engineering role
- U.S. Person status (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, asylum or refugee status) per contractual requirements
- Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software)
- Strong background in requirements engineering, system verification and validation
- Familiarity with MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering)
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or related languages
- Prior experience with laser systems, cryogenic/ optical systems, and quantum computing hardware
- Ability to mentor junior engineers
- Strong communication skills
