Job Summary
Principal Software Engineer responsible for leading architectural design of Elsevier's search platform, expanding content search using vector and lexical techniques, and building scalable search systems to enhance user experience. Responsibilities include mentoring team members, collaborating across product, platform, and engineering teams, delivering high-throughput services, automating processes, designing scalable data processing workflows with Spark, Spark Streaming, and Airflow, and writing clean, maintainable code in Python, Java, or Scala in alignment with architecture guidelines. The role involves leading component design across services, diagnosing complex issues in distributed data workflows, leading design discussions and code reviews, developing data models for analytical and operational use cases, and translating product requirements into reliable engineering solutions.
Required Qualifications
- Current expertise with Lucene, Elasticsearch, Solr or other search engines
- Experience with semantic search
- Proficiency in Spark, Spark Streaming, Airflow
- Experience in Java, Python or Scala
- Deep understanding of distributed system design, data modeling, and performance tuning
- Experience with test-driven development and CI/CD practices
- Familiarity with Agile, Kanban or similar methodologies
- Experience with vector/embedding-based search and KNN algorithms
- Exposure to graph-based data models or knowledge graph architecture
- Experience building internal platforms or developer-facing data tooling
- Knowledge of observability practices for data systems (metrics, logs, alerts)
