Principal Highway Engineer - MTO

Job Summary
Lead and manage the Highway Engineering component on MTO transportation projects across Ontario, from planning to execution. Direct design development for functional studies, preliminary design, and detail design, overseeing multidisciplinary projects including rehabilitation, replacement, widening, and expansion of highways and freeways. Coordinate project teams, engineers, designers, and subcontractors while supporting the Project Manager to liaise with MTO and stakeholders. Develop detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets to deliver integrated engineering solutions on time and within scope. Proactively manage risks, identify issues early, and contribute to field investigations, geometric design, drainage design, and construction cost estimation. Prepare technical reports and documentation ensuring quality assurance. Assist in business development activities including proposal preparation and work program development.
Required Qualifications
- University degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering, or a related professional discipline
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
- 15+ years of MTO experience
- Solid experience in MTO Preliminary and/or Detail Design
- Knowledge of MTO's standards and policies, and understanding of the MTO's transportation infrastructure needs
- Advanced knowledge of Highway Engineering theories, principles, legislation, regulations, and technology, including highway design, construction, maintenance, traffic operations, contract delivery, and oversight
- Advance knowledge of relevant software, such as AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, Microstation, and AutoTurn
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage remote or hybrid teams
