Job Summary

Principal Gameplay Engineer role focusing on defining technical direction for core gameplay systems across major game features. Responsibilities include architecting and implementing complex gameplay systems (e.g., character mechanics and emergent gameplay loops), collaborating with design leadership to translate vision into robust, performant engineering solutions, driving technical strategy and engineering standards for gameplay development, contributing engine-level improvements and custom systems as required, mentoring senior/mid-level/junior engineers, conducting rigorous code reviews to elevate code quality, proactively identifying and resolving deep technical challenges (performance bottlenecks, system complexity, architectural risk), and working cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines to ensure clean integration with the broader tech stack. The role requires extensive experience in game engineering, strong C++ skills, Unreal Engine expertise, live-service experience, and proven leadership in engineering architecture and team mentoring. Location is Raleigh, NC with openness to relocation; candidates must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Required Qualifications

  • 10-15 years of experience in game engineering
  • significant time focused on gameplay systems
  • multiple shipped titles
  • exceptional C++ skills
  • expert-level command of Unreal Engine internals (UE4 and/or UE5)
  • experience with live service games
  • engine-level experience: custom subsystems, engine modifications, deep profiling and optimization
  • deep expertise in gameplay systems, complex character mechanics, and interactive world systems
  • proven ability to define and lead technical architecture at a project or studio level
  • strong instincts for gameplay feel, iteration, and design collaboration
  • excellent communication skills for stakeholders
  • experience leading or mentoring engineering teams in a high-growth or studio environment
  • based in Raleigh, NC or open to relocating
  • legal authorization to work in the U.S.
