Job Summary
Principal Firmware/FPGA Engineer (Onsite) in Cambridge, MA. Develop real-time embedded system architectures and multi-domain hardware/software solutions using HDL/RTL (Verilog/VHDL), DSP techniques, and high-speed interfaces. Lead design and prototyping of experimental/testbeds for real-time sensor processing, quantum information and photonic systems, and contribute to DCLT-style algorithms in challenging, high-noise environments. Requires STEM degree with 8+ years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with 5+ years, strong FPGA development background (RTL design, verification, timing, bring-up, validation), experience with Ethernet/sFPDP/SPI and high-speed memory interfaces (HBM2, DDR), scripting (bash/Tcl), and eligibility for U.S. government security clearance. Relocation assistance offered; onsite at RTX Cambridge HQ; salary range 107,500–204,500 USD. Involves collaboration across hardware, firmware, and software teams with opportunities to work on advanced R&D hardware and real-time control systems.
Required Qualifications
- STEM degree (Bachelor's or higher) typically required; advanced degree with 5+ years can satisfy alternative
- 8+ years relevant FPGA/RTL development experience or 5+ years with advanced degree
- Professional experience in FPGA development: RTL design, verification, timing analysis, board bring-up, validation
- DSP fundamentals and implementation on FPGAs
- Experience with high-speed interfaces: Ethernet, sFPDP, SPI; memory interfaces (HBM2, DDR)
- Scripting experience (bash, Tcl, etc.)
- Ability to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance (Secret)
- Experience with SoC boards, bare-metal code, embedded Linux (Petalinux) a plus
- Experience with RFSoC and high-speed analog signal generation/digitization
- Linux driver development for FPGA peripherals
- HDL expertise with Verilog, VHDL; RTL design and verification
- C/C++, Python software development
- Clearance-related requirements and onsite/hybrid considerations
