Principal Engineer - General Civils

Job Summary
Lead the design and planning of civil engineering infrastructure including earthworks, roads, stormwater, and sewer systems. Perform specific and moderate/complex portions of broader assignments, providing specialized technical input and identifying discrepancies in design calculations and BIM models. Mentor subordinate staff and coordinate/manage small to mid-sized teams while ensuring project execution aligns with quality management systems. Monitor performance against budget, quality, and schedule targets. Prepare technical specifications and develop construction cost estimates. Liaise with clients to gather requirements, defend work, and participate in bid proposals. Gather and correlate engineering data using established procedures. This role supports AECOM's Enterprise Capabilities team in Bellville, Cape Town, focusing on delivering high-quality specialist services across global project teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Engineering
- 12+ relevant experience post qualification
- Professionally registered with ECSA and/or CPEng/CMEngNZ
- Own reliable transport
- Solid experience in the design of civil infrastructural elements (earthworks/grading, roads, stormwater, sewer and water - utilities), particularly in a multi-disciplinary project delivery environment, across all project stages, across varying market sectors
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Good working knowledge of ProjectWise and BIM360 / ACS
- Experience in the execution of multi-disciplinary projects through BIM
- Demonstrate experience in leading/managing infrastructure projects
- Good communication skills (written and verbal)
- Must be based in South Africa's Enterprise Capabilities office in Bellville, Cape Town
- Must be available to work from an AECOM office at least three days per week
- Must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in 12D Model
- Experience working in other (international) standard specifications and/or design guidelines will be advantageous. Australia and New Zealand in particular
