Job Summary
Principal Engineer - DBRE role leading architectural direction for the database reliability platform across SQL Server, Aurora PostgreSQL, and Snowflake. Hands-on IC responsible for high availability, disaster recovery, observability, and platform automation across mission-critical workloads; driving cross-region DR, platform refresh orchestration, alerting redesign, and cost optimization; setting technical writing standards with RFCs and runbooks; reducing toil through provisioning, refresh, patching, scaling, and failover automation; leading incident response and RCA-driven platform improvements; defining reliability KPIs and dashboards; collaborating with application engineering, infrastructure, and SRE on schema design, data lifecycle, and cross-team roadmaps.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field
- 9+ years of professional engineering experience
- Experience as principal-level or equivalent individual contributor
- Deep expertise in at least one major relational database platform (SQL Server or PostgreSQL) including replication, HA/DR architectures, performance tuning, query optimization, and internals
- Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS preferred) including VPC, EC2, EBS, FSx, IAM, RDS/Aurora, cross-region replication
- Programming skills in at least one of Python, PowerShell, Go, or T-SQL
- Proven track record delivering large-scale reliability initiatives (HA/DR, observability, automation platforms) with measurable outcomes
- Experience leading incident response, RCAs, and post-incident improvements in 24x7 environments
- Experience with observability platforms (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana), modern alerting design, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins)
- Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to produce design documents and executive-level summaries
- Experience across multiple database platforms (SQL Server / PostgreSQL / Snowflake / Aurora) and familiarity with financial-services data domains (bonus)
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field with 9+ years of professional engineering experience
- Ability to influence stakeholders across engineering, infrastructure, and business teams
- Strong collaboration with application engineering, infrastructure, and SRE teams
