Principal Ecologist

Job Summary

Lead and manage the delivery of ecological projects, ensuring quality control, coordination, and completion within assigned teams while meeting time, budgetary, and SHEQ targets. Direct the design and compliance of biosecurity and health and safety protocols, providing technical advice and leadership to exceed client expectations across diverse portfolios including residential developments, infrastructure schemes, and environmental impact assessments. Accountable for leading project teams and managing client relationships, with the ability to line manage and mentor staff under the guidance of industry-recognised Technical Leaders. Deliver on-site survey work and prepare technical documentation such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, and Habitat Regulation Assessments. This role requires Chartered Environmentalist status, full survey licenses, and the ability to travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of ecological principles
  • Detailed knowledge of biodiversity metrics
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant environmental and ecological impact assessment (EcIA) legislation, policy and guidance
  • In-depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups
  • Appropriate field survey skills
  • Proven track record in writing and delivering Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs)
  • Proven track record in writing and/or delivering Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments
  • Proven track record in delivering Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)
  • Proven track record in writing Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements which have been successfully consented
  • Proven track record in writing project and/or plan-level Habitat Regulation Assessments (HRAs)
  • Excellent commercial and project management skills
  • Proven experience of bid production
  • Proven experience of client interaction
  • Ability to line manage
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Survey and/or mitigation/conservation licenses
  • Leads in the design and compliance of biosecurity and health and safety protocols
  • Chartered Environmentalist/Ecologist
  • Demonstrably approaching Chartered Ecologist
  • Full member of CIEEM
  • Ability to travel, when necessary
