Principal Consultant, Safety

Job Summary

Serve as the owner's Safety representative across the capital project lifecycle, providing oversight, verification, coaching, and escalation while contractors retain execution responsibility. Embed Safety in Design through planning, engineering, constructability reviews, and PHA/PSM-informed assessments to identify and mitigate risks from early stages through commissioning and closeout. Define EHS requirements for scopes of work, bid packages, execution plans, safety plans, phase gates, and contractor onboarding processes. Design and execute project EHS governance, including risk reviews, site audits, escalation pathways, and management reporting. Align project, engineering, construction, and client teams on safety expectations and incident-free execution. Review contractor safe work documentation including JHAs, permits, lift plans, and training records. Conduct field observations and daily pre-shift meetings to verify controls and assess conformance. Track EHS observations, audit findings, and corrective actions while supporting turnover readiness and documentation transfer. Requires valid driver's license, 6+ years of capital project EHS experience, and ability to travel frequently.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health and safety, engineering, construction management, or related field or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of capital project EHS experience
  • 10+ years of capital project EHS experience
  • Experience with Safety in Design
  • Experience with constructability reviews
  • Experience with PHA/PSM-informed risk reviews
  • Experience with project EHS governance processes
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA construction/general industry standards
  • Strong knowledge of LOTO
  • Strong knowledge of permitting
  • Strong knowledge of emergency response
  • Strong knowledge of fire protection
  • Strong knowledge of high-risk construction controls
  • Experience reviewing contractor safe work documentation
  • Experience reviewing JHAs
  • Experience reviewing pre-task plans
  • Experience reviewing permits
  • Experience reviewing lift plans
  • Experience reviewing energy isolation plans
  • Experience reviewing training records
  • Experience reviewing toolbox talks
