Job Summary
Principal Cable System Design Engineer will lead HV/EHV cable system design for large-scale infrastructure projects, guiding concepts to completion. You will develop routing, burial risk assessments, and performance modelling (thermal, electromagnetic, mechanical), provide expert input on cable ratings, installation methodologies, jointing, cleating, and system integration, and validate calculations (ampacity, short-circuit forces, EMC, induced voltages, thermomechanical effects) against National Grid TPs, IEC, and CIGRÉ standards. The role requires engaging with clients and senior stakeholders, coordinating between civil, structural, OHL, substation, and marine disciplines, driving project execution, coordinating procurement, construction, and commissioning, and conducting 3rd-party inspections and vendor oversight. You will mentor the wider team, contribute to capability growth in cable systems engineering, and support business development through proposals and client presentations. The position sits within AECOM’s Transmission & Distribution team and offers a hybrid working model with opportunities for career development, technical leadership, and involvement in shaping the grid of tomorrow.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience as a technical leader in HV/EHV cable system design
- Experience in design, specification, and installation of complex cable systems including tunnel, urban, and constrained environments
- In-depth understanding of international and UK-specific standards, particularly National Grid TPs, IEC, and CIGRÉ guidelines
- Experience with regulated, quality-assured environments—preferably with National Grid, SSE, EirGrid, or equivalent TSO/DNOs
- Strong ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and engage with senior stakeholders across the project lifecycle
- Excellent communication, client-facing, and team leadership/mentorship skills
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or related field; MSc/MEng advantageous
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards
- National Grid CDAE certification or similar
- Experience with cable system software (e.g., CYMCAP, WinCable) and advanced analysis tools
