Job Summary
Prescribed Fire Practitioner IV role supporting the North America Fire program by conducting prescribed burns, preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, and assisting with vegetation management across the United States. Responsibilities include directing tasks with local Fire Management staff, overseeing staff/volunteers during fire activities, operating ATVs/UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, and related gear, utilizing mobile mapping tools (Collector for ArcGIS, Avenza Maps), documenting time and expenses, maintaining safety practices, and building professional relationships with fire agencies and communities. Requires staying current with burn techniques and certifications, ability to work in remote locations and variable weather, and occasional travel for assignments (minimum two weeks per assignment with eight weeks expected over six months). Must meet physical fitness standards, possess relevant fire qualifications (e.g., FFT1, Senior Burn Crew Member), and have a high school diploma with related experience. Salary is hourly, range $28.00–$34.00 per hour, with travel and lodging covered for assignments; part-time, seasonal, with overtime after 40 hours per week.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1-year training in fire operations or related field or land management experience
- Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and FFT1 task book completion
- Two or more seasons as a Senior Burn Crew Member or similar agency qualification
- Physical fitness standards as per local Fire Manager and TNC Fire Manual
- Experience operating and maintaining equipment
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers
- Possibly CPR and herbicide-use certifications
Desired Qualifications
- Two or more seasons as a Senior Burn Crew Member or similar agency qualification
- Single Resource Boss qualified (ENGB, FIRB, and/or CRWB)
- Has a valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Two years of training in fire operations or other science-related fields or related experience in land management
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers
- CPR and herbicide application certifications may be required
