Job Summary
Preschool Teacher Assistant responsibilities include supporting the classroom teacher to create a safe, engaging learning environment aligned with Head Start Performance Standards and Oregon policies; supervising children indoors and outdoors; assisting with classroom setup, materials, and daily activities; supporting curriculum implementation and a balance of teacher-directed and child-directed learning; conducting observations and maintaining portfolios; communicating with the teacher about children’s health and development; supporting family engagement through newsletters, conferences, and home visits; promoting healthy practices and confidentiality; participating in staff trainings and meetings; maintaining reliable attendance; and performing related duties. Education and experience requirements vary by role tier, with options ranging from high school diploma/GED to CDA certification, Oregon Registry steps, and/or community college certificates, and pathways for enrolled students pursuing further education. Metro locations have higher pay scales. Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) certificate within 6 months from date of hire
- One year Oregon community college certificate in early childhood development with focus on preschool development within 1 year from date of hire
- Enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s program in early childhood education or child development to be completed within 2 years from date of hire
- Preschool CDA certificate or higher in some tracks
- Oregon Registry Step less than 8 (for PTA-E) or 8 or greater (for other pay scales)
- Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or related field for higher pay tier
- Metro location qualifications (Portland metro includes specific counties)
Desired Qualifications
- Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) certificate within 6 months from date of hire
- Oregon Registry Step 8 or higher
- One year Oregon community college certificate in early childhood development with focus on preschool development
- Enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s program in early childhood education or child development to be completed within 2 years from date of hire
- Associate’s degree or higher in early childhood education or child development (for some roles)
- Training or coursework in early childhood development with focus on preschool development
- Oregon Registry Step 7 or higher for PTA-E with pay steps
