Job Summary
Lead a team focused on public messaging for the general public and groups disproportionately affected by public health incidents. Conduct proactive risk communications planning, strategy development, and oversee the execution of external public communications during emergency response operations. Monitor reports for potential outbreaks to inform messaging that prevents illness and minimizes risk, while updating emergency communications plans in coordination with the Office of Preparedness and Response. Serve as a departmental spokesperson in incident responses regarding issues such as West Nile Virus, Flu, and Heat. Collaborate with partner cities, school districts, and county departments to align communication messaging and train department Subject Matter Experts in media relations tools.
Required Qualifications
- Three years of public relations experience
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public administration, or a related field
- A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
- Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health
- required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza
- some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
- Must pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy
- including drug and alcohol testing requirements for positions designated as safety-sensitive
Desired Qualifications
- Three to five years of public relations experience
- Three or more years of crisis and emergency risk communications experience
- Two or more years of developing and implementing communications plans
- Two or more years of supervisory experience
