Preconstruction Engineer 1

Job Summary
Review project plans, specifications, and addenda to understand the scope and basis of design for building automation work. Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for devices, controllers, panels, and wiring, then develop accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, and subcontractors using company standards and historical data. Prepare estimate backups including bills of materials and documented assumptions to support sales proposals, while collaborating with Inside and Outside Sales Engineers to confirm scope boundaries and evaluate vendor quotations. Participate in internal review cycles to validate accuracy and assist in assembling internal estimate packages and customer-facing proposal inputs. Maintain organized estimating files and unit cost libraries to drive consistency, and support revisions for scope changes or value-engineering ideas. Work as an integral part of the regional sales and operations team, responding to estimating requests according to agreed priorities and timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related technical field
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and detail‐orientation skills
- Basic understanding of HVAC and/or building automation systems
- Proficiency with Excel
- Proficiency with basic estimating or takeoff tools (for example, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar)
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast‐paced environment
- Team‐oriented mindset with a strong internal customer service focus toward the sales and operations teams
Desired Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related technical field preferred
