Job Summary

Pre-Licensed Veterinary Technician to provide hands-on clinical support in a fast-paced small animal emergency teaching hospital. Working under supervision of Licensed Veterinary Technicians and veterinarians, the role includes assisting with patient care (physical exams, low-stress handling and restraint, medication administration, patient transport), supporting diagnostic and treatment procedures (laboratory sample collection, processing, clinical area preparation), and client service (appointments, consultations, discharges). Maintains organized clinical spaces and completes basic electronic medical record tasks (ezyVet). Requires enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology degree program with the goal of degree completion within three years; vaccination series pre-exposure rabies is paid by the department. Onsite in Ithaca, NY with availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other shifts. Salary is hourly with benefits. This role emphasizes developing practical veterinary nursing skills while pursuing licensure.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma with six months of basic animal handling experience
  • Accepted and enrolled in an AVMA accredited associates’ degree in veterinary technology distant learning program
  • Must successfully obtain Veterinary Technology degree within three years with consistent enrollment
  • Ability to stand, kneel, lift, and safely restrain animals weighing more than 50 pounds
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other shifts as needed under the supervision of a veterinarian or Licensed Veterinary Technician
  • Working knowledge of basic veterinary medicine concepts, including vaccinations, laboratory testing, common diseases, medical terminology, and animal behavior
  • Ability to learn and effectively use electronic medical record systems, including ezyVet
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to receive, apply, and respond positively to feedback
