Job Summary
The Pre Anesthesia Assessment Nurse RN collaborates with anesthesia providers to plan and organize all aspects of care for scheduled surgical patients. The PAT anesthesia protocols require gathering clinical information necessary for the safe and effective administration of anesthesia through a process convenient for patients and physicians, improving surgical throughput. The nurse coordinates care through a multidisciplinary team of University Health providers and external providers, reviews outside records pertinent to the patient’s care, performs systems review, chart and test result review, and patient interviews to initiate remedial action when warranted. The role involves coordination with Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Pulmonology to optimize patients for safe anesthesia and positive surgical outcomes, education for surgery preparation and what patients will encounter, and providing patient-specific instructions (medications, diet, infection prevention) for day of surgery. The position aims to minimize delays, postponements, and cancellations, thereby increasing OR utilization and patient satisfaction, with a focus on patient education and preparation.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited RN nursing program
- Current state of Missouri license as a Registered Nurse or eligible for Missouri RN licensure
- Current BCLS and ACLS card (for the ASC staff, only the BCLS is required)
- 2-3 years’ experience in peri-operative setting
- 1-2 years med/surg or ICU experience
- Demonstrated ability to maintain interactive/interpersonal relationships
- Possess a good working knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and legal aspects of nursing, and techniques, care and use of equipment used in an ambulatory surgery center setting
- Interview/communication skills, nursing assessment skills, critical thinking/problem solving skills, and teaching/counseling skills
- Possess strong computer skills and experience with health care applications, Microsoft and/or Windows applications
- Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed environment with little supervision
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent telephone communication skills with voice/speech pattern that is articulate and presents a pleasant tone
