Practice Leader – Building Structures

Job Summary

Lead the NYC Building Structures practice by providing day-to-day leadership to Project Managers and technical staff, ensuring compliance with NYC Building Codes and managing project health across steel, concrete, and timber systems. Assume responsibility for the practice's business operations, including budgeted margins, cash management, and contract negotiations with clients and subconsultants. Drive business development by identifying new opportunities, preparing qualification statements for RFPs, and maintaining relationships with public agencies and private developers. Manage the full project lifecycle from schedule development to delivery, while recruiting, mentoring staff, and supporting their professional growth toward PE licensure. Serve as Project Manager or Engineer of Record on select high-visibility projects as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of progressive structural engineering experience
  • Substantial NYC project experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading NYC DOB filings
  • Experience leading Special Inspections
  • Experience leading projects under LL11/FISP
  • Experience leading projects under LL97
  • Established relationships with NYC public agencies
  • Established relationships with major private developers
  • Proven track record of business development
  • Proven track record of team leadership
  • Proven track record of P&L responsibility in the NYC market
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum of 7 years of related professional experience
  • 11 years of equivalent professional experience
  • Progressive professional and increasing project management and organizational management experience
  • Proven experience in project management roles within the technical practice
  • Demonstrated leadership capability to build and lead teams of technical practitioners and/or project managers
  • Strong interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgets, project margins, and cash flow
  • Experience in business development
  • Commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence within the Practice
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Adaptability and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools use in the practice area
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to the service line
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York State
  • Pre-employment drug screening
  • Background check
  • Motor vehicle checks

Desired Qualifications

  • SE licensure a plus
  • Established relationships with NYC public agencies and/or major private developers preferred
  • Proven track record of business development, team leadership, and P&L responsibility in the NYC market
