Power Electronics Controls Engineer, Energy Storage
$160,000–$252,500 year
On-site · San Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Power Electronics Controls Engineer to design and implement intelligent control systems for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and mixed-asset energy sites. Lead development of advanced control algorithms for high-power BESS (grid-forming and grid-following), design bidirectional DC/DC and AC/DC schemes for industrial-scale storage, build high-fidelity Digital Twins of power stages and grid environments using MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS, and lead Hardware-in-the-Loop testing (Opal-RT/Typhoon) to validate control firmware. Collaborate with battery and systems teams to optimize performance and longevity of mixed-asset arrays and work with electrical, firmware, and thermal engineers to define the roadmaps for modern energy storage site controllers. Requires MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Electronics Control Systems; strong experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, C, Python, DSPs/microcontrollers, and familiarity with grid-interconnection codes (IEEE 1547, UL 1741). California pay range listed: $160,000—$252,500 USD; full-time role with compensation commensurate with experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Educational Depth: MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Electronics Control Systems (MSc requires 3+ years of relevant industry experience; PhD preferred)
- Topology Mastery: High-efficiency power conversion including LLC, CLLC, DAB; Flying Capacitor (FC) and ANPC
- Control Theory Expertise: Closed-loop controllers (Bode, Nyquist, State-Space) on DSPs or microcontrollers
- Modern Toolchain: MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, C, Python
