Job Summary
Operate a potter’s wheel to process clay and create hand thrown pottery mugs for customers per specifications. After training, complete minimums of 200 pieces per shift. Cut clay to correct dimensions with harp; throw pieces to correct dimensions and shape; adjust wheel speeds as clay changes. Raise and shape clay into wares on revolving wheels; smooth surfaces with profile tools to specified dimensions. Pull wire through base of finished product and transfer to ware board, then to fan box. Inspect finished ware for defects with a rule and thickness gauge. Workspace should not be shared but left so others can sit at the workstation if needed. Daily cleaning, safety and health training participation. Compensation after training: learning curve is compensated at hourly rate until competency is achieved. Physical conditions include lifting 25-50 pounds, varied temperatures and conditions, and ability to stand/sit, and use hands constantly. The schedule may start as early as 6:00 am and last 6.5-8 hours, finishing before 6:00 pm. Location: St Paul, MN, US. Education preferred but not required; prior pottery throwing experience is required (2-4 years ceramic studies and/or 2-4 years wheel throwing); target production 1,000 mugs per 40-hour week. Required Qualifications
- Prior experience in throwing pottery is required, which includes 2-4 years of ceramic studies and/or 2-4 years experience throwing on a wheel
- Must be able to complete a minimum of 1,000 mugs per a maximum 40-hour workweek
- Must have the ability to work both alone and within a team environment
- BA/BS or High School diploma or GED preferred, but not required
- Must be able to enter daily production information into the computer
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Must have good hand and eye coordination
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles; able to work in conditions with heat, cold and dust
- Lifting 25-50 pounds frequently
- Able to sit for prolonged periods at the potter’s wheel
