Job Summary

Postdoctoral Scholar in Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine, located on campus in Hershey, PA, focused on developing next-generation mechanical circulatory support devices, including a pediatric ventricular assist device and continuous-flow blood pumps. Responsibilities include designing and optimizing rotary blood pump components (impellers/rotors, volutes, hydrodynamic bearings), conducting CFD and FSI simulations to evaluate hydraulic performance and blood damage, planning and performing in vitro testing and in vivo (large-animal) studies, analyzing data, preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, contributing to grant applications and progress reports, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Required Qualifications

  • Recent PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Significant experience in mechanical circulatory support systems or rotary blood pump development
  • Demonstrated expertise in turbomachinery design, tribology, hydrodynamic bearings, CFD/FSI modeling, or pump hydraulic testing
  • Proficiency with engineering software such as CAD (e.g. SolidWorks), CFD solvers (e.g., CONVERGE, ANSYS Fluent, ABAQUS), and FEM/FSI tools
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong written and verbal communication skills
