Job Summary
Postdoctoral Researcher at NYBG to work on the ecophysiology and evolution of biophotonic leaf traits in shade-adapted plants. Responsibilities include designing and implementing laboratory experiments to characterize photosynthetic responses, conducting phylogenetic analyses, preparing histology/imaging of tissue samples, working with 3D microCT datasets and ML analyses to model optical behavior of plant tissues, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team, mentoring junior scientists, and leading publications. Requires PhD by start date, plant physiology/phylogenetics experience, coding in R or Python, and a strong publication record. Onsite position with NYBG’s hybrid policy; salary $65,000 per year; benefits include vacation, holidays, health/dental, 401K, and pension. Schedule is Monday–Friday 9am–5pm; occasional travel to conferences or meetings.
Required Qualifications
- PhD by the start of the appointment
- Experience in phylogenetic methods
- Experience with plant physiology, especially leaf traits and photosynthesis
- Coding experience (R, Python, or similar)
- Publication record showing proof of skillsets above; pre-prints acceptable
- Experience or proven strong desire to study leaf traits, photosynthesis, plant tissue optics, understory plant ecophysiology, Begoniaceae, or other relevant research topic
- Experience with microCT 3D imaging and analysis is a plus but not required
- Experience with machine learning and/or deep learning is a plus but not required
