Job Summary
Conduct two or more research projects simultaneously with a high level of independence under the supervision of Prof. Jihye Kim, focusing on critical metals extraction and waste recycling. Design and perform hands-on extractive metallurgy experiments, including leaching, solvent extraction, and electrochemical processing, while analyzing results to disseminate findings through publications and conferences. Develop process flowsheets and perform simulations using MetSim, and advise undergraduate and graduate students on research initiatives. Engage in professional activities and interact with researchers from industrial and federal laboratory communities to advance career opportunities. This 12-month full-time position requires regular work with hazardous chemicals and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in metallurgy, chemical engineering, materials science, mining engineering, chemistry, or related field
- demonstrated background and experience in extractive metallurgy
- demonstrated background and experience in critical metals extraction
- demonstrated background and experience in waste recycling
- Demonstrated experience using MetSim
- Demonstrated experience in electrochemical processing
- electrowinning
- electrorefining
- Successful completion of a background investigation
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with other process simulation and thermodynamic software, such as OLI Systems, Aspen Plus, HSC Chemistry, FactSage, and Hydra/Medusa
