Polysomnographic Technician/Registered Respiratory Therapist

Job Summary
Conduct polysomnographic studies and monitor patients for sleep disorders under direct supervision, utilizing fine-tuned computerized precision instruments and advanced EMG knowledge. Independently plan difficult assignments, recognize abnormally functioning equipment, and render initial repairs or discontinue studies when necessary. Provide detailed diagnostic tests and monitoring while tactfully communicating procedures to families and maintaining communication with partially or fully disrobed patients. Work 4-5 nights weekly between 7 pm and 7 am at the McDonald Army Health Center in Fort Eustis, Virginia, serving active military service members and their families.
Required Qualifications
- US Citizen
- licensed Polysomnographic Technician
- RPSGT
- one year of experience performing similar duties
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certified by the American Heart Association
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
- Knowledgeable of a body of standardized patient care and skills sufficient to perform procedures
- Working knowledge of equipment and supply terminology
- Knowledgeable and possesses skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patient
- Must be able to recognize abnormally functioning equipment and render initial repairs
- Must take steps to discontinue study when repairs cannot be made
- Must have practical knowledge of a wide range of technical methods, principles, and practices applicable to sleep study
- Must have the skill to independently plan difficult assignments
- Must have an advanced understanding of sleep disorders and the skill to independently perform procedures involving very fine distinctions and fine-tune complex computerized precision instruments
- Must have an advanced understanding of physiology, especially in relation to cardiopulmonary function
- Must have an advanced understanding of electromyography (EMG) and its application to sleep study
- Must be able to provide a variety of detailed diagnostic tests and monitoring of patients
- Must use tact in establishing and maintaining communication and have no objection or difficulty in viewing partially or fully disrobed patients
- Must be able to communicate effectively when explaining to the family the testing and monitoring procedures to be performed
