Job Summary

Enforce laws, maintain public safety, and respond to threats to life and health by patrolling assigned areas in radio-equipped vehicles or on foot, bicycle, or motorcycle. Apprehend violators, investigate criminal activity and traffic accidents, gather evidence, and render aid to distressed citizens. Complete detailed reports of daily activities and cases, present testimony in court, and maintain visible presence to deter crime. Supervise subordinate officers during training or as Officer in Charge, prepare shift briefings, and serve warrants and subpoenas. Maintain certifications, conduct community education, and perform auxiliary roles as tactical coordinator or defensive tactics instructor. Work irregular hours with moderate physical activity and exposure to hostile situations.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree
  • Minimum of four (4) years of full-time experience as a police officer
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Police Department policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of State law
  • Thorough knowledge of City ordinances
  • Thorough knowledge of standard law enforcement practices and procedures
  • Skill in computers
  • Skill in appropriate use of firearms
  • Skill in other standard law enforcement tools
  • Skill in problem-solving
  • Skill in conflict mediation
  • Ability to establish effective and courteous working relationships with fellow officers
  • Ability to establish effective and courteous working relationships with the public
  • Ability to establish effective and courteous working relationships with other agencies
  • Ability to act with tact and impartiality
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition
  • Score of 3.5 or higher on the previous two annual employee evaluations
  • Demonstrated leadership

Desired Qualifications

  • Lateral Hire Bonus: $15,000 for qualified individuals with one (1) or more years of sworn law enforcement experience
