Job Summary

Enforce laws, maintain public safety, and respond to emergency situations involving threats to life or health while patrolling assigned areas in a radio-equipped vehicle or on foot. Investigate criminal activity, traffic accidents, and violations by apprehending violators, gathering evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Complete detailed daily reports, present testimony in court, and maintain visible presence to deter crime. Perform auxiliary roles as a Field Training Officer, instructor, or tactical coordinator while attending mandatory training and maintaining relevant certifications. Work irregular hours including on-call rotations and demonstrate leadership through close supervision of subordinate officers.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience as a police officer
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of Police Department policies and procedures, state law and City ordinances, standard law enforcement practices and procedures
  • Skill in computers; appropriate use of firearms and other standard law enforcement tools, problem solving, conflict mediation
  • Ability to establish effective and courteous working relationships with fellow officers, the public and other agencies
  • Ability to act with tact and impartiality
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition
  • Score of 3.5 or higher on the previous two annual employee evaluations
  • Demonstrated leadership, above average productivity, exceptional work ethic and proven ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Utah P.O.S.T Law Enforcement Officer Certification
  • Firearms Certification
  • Must possess Utah P.O.S.T. Instructor Development certification, Field Training Officer certification, or similar certifications issued by other states and/or organizations
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test
  • Successful completion of a psychological evaluation
  • Must stand, walk or sit uncomfortably for extended periods
  • Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold dampness, fumes, noise, dust or grease
  • Exposure to hostile, life-threatening situations
  • May be required to use physical force to include deadly force in course of assigned duties
  • Considerable exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior
  • Required to work irregular hours in addition to regularly scheduled shift on an as needed basis
  • Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing job requirements
  • Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions

Desired Qualifications

  • Lateral Hire Bonus: $15,000 for qualified individuals with one (1) or more years of sworn law enforcement experience
