Job Summary

Police Officer Cadet is a contract position in which the individual is a student who must complete an accredited Police Academy. The cadet will earn full-time salary while attending the academy, with the department covering academy costs. After successful completion and passing the state licensing exam, the cadet will be elevated to Police Officer. Requires U.S. citizenship, Texas certification eligibility (TCOLE), 21+ years old, a high school diploma or GED, English literacy, good work/credit history, health and vision standards, and a valid Texas driver’s license. Deeply physical role with extensive essential functions including pursuit, weapon handling, CPR/first aid, investigations, reporting, and patrol duties; work environment involves routine outdoor and indoor activity with varied shifts. Required Qualifications

  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be eligible for certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) as a Peace Officer
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalency certificate
  • Must be able to proficiently read and write the English language
  • Must have demonstrated a positive work history with a good attendance record
  • Must possess and maintain a good credit history and financial record
  • Must meet health standards not to pose a risk to health or safety of others in the workplace
  • Must possess adequate vision and pass the department vision tests (20/20 corrected, 20/200 uncorrected)
  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C driver’s License
  • A police officer cadet must be able to comprehend and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Be able to formulate and employ appropriate courses of action
  • Be able to supply reasoning skills to successfully investigate crimes or events
  • Be able to supply theory-based instructions/training to actual situations
  • Must be able to assess a person’s intentions, behavior, and emotional state in order to make appropriate reactive and proactive decisions
  • Must be able to tolerate stress without medication
  • Must be able to control emotions in face of traumatic situations
  • Adequate ability to maneuver a patrol vehicle at high speeds
  • Engage in physical combat and use of equipment
  • Rescue victims and provide CPR/first aid
  • Pursue suspects outdoors over long distances
  • Operate duty weapon with accuracy
  • Possess and maintain physical fitness
  • Be able to perform duties for long shifts
  • Possess color vision and night vision
  • Possess hearing sufficient to hear radios
  • Be able to read and write in English
  • Ability to perform field sobriety tests
  • Perform administrative duties
  • Complete a wide range of essential job functions as listed in the description
