Job Summary
The UMass Memorial Police Officer enforces medical center policies and Massachusetts laws, conducts patrols, traffic duties, and investigations while promoting crime prevention and community service. Responsibilities include making lawful arrests, providing court testimony, and ensuring the safety of persons and property. Required qualifications include a high school education and completion of police training. Candidates must also possess communication skills and the ability to work under stress. Entry-level candidates must attend a police academy and meet specific certification requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to high school education plus additional specialized courses
- Entry level candidates will be required to attend a full-time police academy authorized by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee
- Academy trained and entry level officers must be able to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) and through the Massachusetts State Police (SSPO)
- First Responder, CPR, Driver’s License, OCAT and in-service classes required
- Class A license to carry firearms in Massachusetts required
- Officers must successfully complete the annual firearms training
- Good communication skills and ability to deal with the general public
- Ability to work under sometimes-stressful conditions and maintain calm composure
Desired Qualifications
- Three (3) years of prior law enforcement experience preferred
- POST certified, academy trained officers
