Job Summary
Lead the design, build, and full lifecycle management of spectroscopic diagnostics for the Alpha stellarator, measuring spatial profiles of ion temperature, impurity concentration, and flow. Develop detailed specifications for charge exchange emission, crystal spectrometers, and wide-band systems covering visible through XUV ranges. Collaborate with engineering teams to establish robust implementations, overseeing procurement, testing, installation, commissioning, calibration, and ongoing operation and maintenance. Manage packages of work to ensure successful deployment of these critical measurement tools.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in physics, engineering, or equivalent experience
- Experience using high resolution spectrometers
- Experience working on at least one spectroscopic diagnostic instrument on a large infrastructure machine (accelerator, telescope, laser or fusion device)
- Strong knowledge of geometric optics and light propagation in optical systems
- Working knowledge of Python software development and modern tool chains (uv, git etc.)
Desired Qualifications
- Experience of designing and building a spectroscopic system for a plasma device
- Experience using optical design software for ray-tracing
