Job Summary
Plasma Heating and Current Drive Physicist sought to join UKAEA’s MAST Upgrade program to support operation, upgrading and maintenance of plasma heating and current drive systems in tokamak plasmas. The role involves developing, improving and maintaining software used for operations and physics/performance analysis; maintaining neutral beam modelling codes; overseeing heating plant subsystems and diagnostics; analysing data to interpret measurements; acting as Shift Leader to support MAST Upgrade operations; conducting project work and feasibility studies for heating systems, and developing innovative research in plasma heating and current drive. Essential requirements include a PhD in Physics/Physical Science or equivalent, knowledge of neutral beam systems and plasma heating/current drive physics, familiarity with fusion concepts and tokamaks, strong communication skills, and proficiency in Python and data-analysis tools; experience with simulation codes, Linux, Bash scripting and versioning systems. Desirable: working towards Chartered Physicist. The role is based at Culham, Oxfordshire, UK with onsite working five days a week and relocation allowance may be available. Required Qualifications
- PhD in Physics/Physical Science or MPhys/Master in physical science and relevant experience
- Good knowledge of neutral beam systems and/or technology
- Familiar with plasma heating and current drive physics
- Basic knowledge of magnetic fusion concepts and tokamaks
- Good inter-personal and communication skills (written and oral)
- Proficient in python programming and other languages for data analysis
- Familiar with simulation codes, Linux, bash scripting and versioning systems
