Job Summary
Determine donor eligibility by conducting medical history interviews, physical examinations, and reviewing laboratory test results, including Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE). Manage donor adverse events and evaluate reactions per SOPs, ensuring proper informed consent and confidential self-exclusion protocols. Support the Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs and coordinate employee incident management with occupational health or emergency response as needed. Act as Pandemic Coordinator when authorized to support investigations related to local community threats. This Medical Support Specialist role supports plasma center operations under the Center Manager and Center Physician, contributing to life-changing medicines for patients with rare diseases.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent to including graduate equivalent of a recognized educational nursing program with state requirements
- Currently licensed or certified in the state where responsibilities will be assigned: Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED certification
- Fulfill state requirements (in state of licensure) for basic IV therapy
- Satisfactorily complete the FDA approved training requirements for BioLife Medical Support Specialist
- Two years in a clinical or hospital setting
- Familiar with regulations of the plasma collection industry or a manufacturing environment
- Ability to determine donor eligibility to donate plasma
- Ability to manage donor adverse events
- Ability to review laboratory test results
- Ability to notify donors of unsuitable test results
- Ability to manage informed consent
- Ability to provide AIDS education and confidential self-exclusion
- Ability to conduct medical history interviews and acceptance requirements
- Ability to perform physical examinations
- Ability to review Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE)
- Ability to evaluate donor reactions
- Ability to follow applicable SOPs for medical emergencies
- Ability to develop Center Physician's standing orders
- Ability to coordinate donor transport to emergency care facilities
- Ability to refer to the Center Physician or Medical Affairs for unacceptable findings
- Ability to provide guidance concerning medical or technical issues
- Ability to support the Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees
- Ability to manage employee incidents
- Ability to determine whether further evaluation is required by occupational health/ER
- Ability to refer to EHS guidance regarding employee incidents
- Ability to be a Pandemic Coordinator when authorized by EHS
- Ability to support investigations associated with pandemic threats within the local community
