Job Summary
Conduct shop and shipboard pipefitter trade functions using brazing and cutting equipment to repair, remove, and install structural materials and complex fluid system piping. Fabricate component parts by applying brazing and welding processes to join piping and hangers, working from blueprints and engineering sketches to develop complete units as designed. Lay out and mark points on parts using measuring instruments, position pieces in jigs and fixtures, and remove old equipment with minimal damage to surrounding materials. Maintain certification in brazing procedures and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures while participating in special projects as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- technical/vocational training or the equivalent combination
- 1-5 years of related experience
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis
- Current brazing Certification for Cu and CuNi piping materials
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check
- obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed
- Advanced knowledge of welding tools and procedures
- Knowledge of geometry, weld shrinkage, welding techniques, and physical properties of metal
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Frequently the employee is required to carry objects that might weigh up to 50 pounds
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in the marine fitter trade gained through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training
