Job Summary
Plan, layout, weld, install, test and repair all types of pipe and similar tubular products in accordance with plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision. Regular attendance with flexibility for overtime, weekends, and holidays. Review layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders; complete welds to specified standards using arc, TIG, SMAW methods; install and verify operation of high-pressure pipes and fittings; repair/replace damaged pipe; fabricate/install fittings, supports, valves, and related equipment; test installed piping systems; set up welding equipment; troubleshoot. Must pass 6G stainless steel, CUNI, and aluminum TIG weld coupons and 6G carbon steel weld coupon. Strong reading of blueprints, mechanical diagrams, and welding symbols; safety-conscious with OSHA/ABS standards awareness; able to work with minimal supervision and in physically demanding conditions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalence plus three to five years of pipe welding experience desired
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Requires working knowledge of measuring, fitting and welding steel; x-ray pipe welding experience with ability to weld pipe in all positions; knowledge of welding symbols, ship terminology, OSHA and ABS standards
- Must pass SMAW 6G Pipe Test to become ABS Certified
- Ability to read and comprehend written/verbal/diagram forms or plans; ability to read blueprints; ability to use hand and power tools
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure; ability to read a tape measure
- Safety-conscious with ability to work in heavy industrial shipyard environment
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends
- Ability to set up equipment and weld parts including high-pressure steel pipes and fittings
- Produce high-quality welds including watertight penetrations
