Job Summary
Doctors of optometry (ODs) are the primary care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system and eye, identify related systemic conditions, and provide pre- and postoperative care (e.g., cataract patients and laser vision correction). Responsibilities include performing primary care examinations with refraction, diagnosing vision problems and eye disease, testing visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision, analyzing results, developing treatment plans, providing emergency eye care within scope, and administering drugs as licensure allows. Licensure, NBEO completion, continuing education, and supporting documentation (reference letters) are required for privileges at Sanford Health facilities.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association.
- Applicants must have cared for at least 50 patients requiring optometry services in the past 12 months or completion of Optometry program in the past 12 months.
- Licensed to practice as an Optometrist in the state where requesting Allied Health appointment.
- Successfully passed all parts of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examination.
- Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede the job description in defining minimum qualifications and scope of practice if variation exists.
- Continued education requirements per regulatory agency or Sanford Health Facility.
- Letter of reference from Optometry program director or head of surgery department/ chief medical officer as applicable.
