Job Summary
Assist cardiothoracic surgeons during procedures including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair, and complex cardiac surgeries. Perform tissue handling such as making incisions, dissecting, and suturing while providing hemostasis. Execute chest closure, transport patients to the CVSICU/PACU, and harvest saphenous or radial veins for bypass. First or second assist with cannulation, graft anastomosis, and femoral access catheters. Requires current Maryland licensure, NCCPA certification, and at least two years of direct cardiac surgery experience. Four 10-hour daytime shifts weekly with on-call availability for urgent procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Current licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA) or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program or Masters or Doctorate in Nursing, Acute Care NP
- For Acute Care NP, certified as an RNFA
- Certification as a Physician Assistant (NCCPA)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
- Cardiac Surgery OR experience, at least 2 years, required
- Proficiency in performing endovascular vein harvest is required
- Demonstrated strong understanding of hemodynamic principles relevant to cardiac patients, including the ability to assess these parameters accurately and communicate findings clearly and promptly to the appropriate clinical team members
- Four 10-hour clinical daytime shifts/week
- On-call requirement during non-routine working hours to assist attending physicians in urgent and emergency procedures
Desired Qualifications
- Recent graduates: Candidates with less than one year of experience who have completed an accredited cardiac surgery PA residency/fellowship program will be considered
- Experienced candidates: Minimum of two years of direct surgical assistant (or equivalent) experience in cardiac surgery
