Job Summary

Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students and collaborate with the educational team to implement them effectively. Utilize specialized techniques to help students overcome physical limitations, improve balance, and increase activity levels while maintaining a safe, positive therapeutic environment. Create and maintain safety protocols, including CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) procedures, to intervene during behavioral escalations or unsafe situations. Continuously evaluate and adjust treatment plans based on student progress and feedback, working closely with parents to ensure continuity of care. Stay current on research related to autism spectrum disorders and utilize computer-based documentation systems.

Required Qualifications

  • MA/Doctorate's degree in Physical Therapy
  • Active license to practice physical therapy in the state of New York
  • Must be able to keep students safe from themselves and others
  • Must be able to remove oneself from potentially harmful situations
  • Must be able to lift a child
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the workday
  • Must be able to lift (at least 50–65 pounds), assist, and/or physically support students
  • Must be able to physically intervene when required to ensure safety
  • Must be able to remove oneself and/or others from unsafe situations quickly
  • Must be able to maintain attention and focus in a dynamic, high-stimulation environment
  • Must be able to multi-task and shift priorities quickly
  • Must be able to exercise sound judgment and decision-making, particularly in high-pressure or safety-sensitive situations
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Must be able to perform duties under stress, including during behavioral escalations
  • Must be able to use technology and computer-based documentation systems

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience working as a physical therapist with individuals on the autism spectrum
  • Strong knowledge of Sensory Processing and how to support regulation
  • Knowledge of CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
