Job Summary
Assist the physical therapist in treatment planning, evaluation procedures, and patient care using modalities, therapeutic exercise, and assistive devices. Provide verbal and written feedback on patient condition changes, determine equipment needs, and document status and progress according to established standards. Instruct patients and families in physical therapy procedures and participate in interdisciplinary conferences to integrate treatment plans. Maintain clean treatment areas, follow hospital policies, and provide discipline-specific coverage as requested. Serve as a clinical instructor for PT students by supervising, teaching, and evaluating their skills.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program
- Licensure with the State of Michigan
- Possesses and maintains BLS certification to meet department/program protocol
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
- Must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs
- Must provide physical therapy services as assigned by, and under the supervision of, a physical therapist
- Must keep treatment skills updated through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development
- Must perform job responsibilities in accordance with the program's strategic objectives and goals
- Must provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation
- Must assist the physical therapist in treatment planning and conducting evaluation procedures
- Must assist the physical therapist in treating patients utilizing modalities, therapeutic exercise, assistive devices, and functional activities
- Must provide verbal and/or written feedback to the physical therapist regarding all significant observations or changes in the patient's condition, reaction, and response to treatment
- Must assist the physical therapist in determining equipment and supply needs
- Must participate in the acquisition and inventory of equipment and supply items
- Must function as primary therapist in treatment of patient following evaluation and direction of physical therapist
- Must document patient's status and progress according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines
- Must communicate with others to integrate physical therapy treatment with all aspects of patient care
- Must participate in conferences/discussions and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members as directed by the physical therapist
- Must instruct the patient and the family in physical therapy procedures as part of providing patient and family education including written instructions as necessary
- Must participate in various meetings and in-services as designated
- Must follow all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control
- Must meet or exceed program productivity expectations
- Must provide discipline specific coverage (following cross training) within the Mary Free Bed system as requested
- Must support program operations as assigned
- Must function as patient advocate
- Must demonstrate competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities
- Must adhere to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers and members of the community
- Must serve as clinical instructor for physical therapist assistant students
- Must supervise, teach, and evaluate skills of students and volunteers
- Must communicate with participating universities regarding skill levels of students
- Must function as a resource person in area of expertise
- Must participate in program development and/or research activities as assigned
- Must participate in orientation and training of new staff
- Must assist in maintaining clean and orderly treatment areas
- Must demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors
- Must encourage, coach, and monitor customer service standards in team members
- Must consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers
- Must deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information
