Job Summary
Perform laboratory specimen collection procedures including venipunctures, capillary punctures, and heel sticks for patients across all hospital areas. Properly label specimens with patient identifiers and initials in the patient's presence. Execute clerical duties such as faxing, answering phones, operating the pneumatic tube system, and registering reference lab orders. Maintain strict confidentiality of hospital and patient information while working individually or as part of the technical staff team.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or validation of higher level education such as technical college, associate, bachelor, or master's degree
- Diploma or transcripts are required upon hire
- Must be able to perform venipunctures
- Must be able to perform capillary punctures
- Must be able to perform heel sticks
- Must have knowledge of various needles and devices
- Must be able to label the specimen properly (patient name, date of birth, date, time of collection, and phlebotomist initials)
- Must be able to work individually but also as a team with the technical staff in the lab and the outside customers of the lab
- Must always keep hospital and patient information confidential at all times
Desired Qualifications
- Some phlebotomy experience preferred
- 2 years of laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred
- Certification as a phlebotomist is preferred
