Job Summary
Process laboratory orders and perform phlebotomy procedures for patients of all ages, including adrenal studies, MRI pediatric draws, lumbar punctures, and bone marrow collections. Navigate the Lab Information System to locate medical orders, verify patient information, and prioritize specimen collections by urgency. Perform point-of-care testing, process samples using various instruments, and facilitate result distribution via fax, phone, or delivery. Register patients for laboratory services, collect payments, and research diagnostic codes for Medicare and other insurance programs. Greet clients at the outpatient draw station, assist nurses and physicians in specialty procedures, and respond quickly to codes and traumas in tight quarters.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification
- Ability to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely
- Ability to meet St. Charles Health System driving requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, operate a keyboard, grasp/squeeze, and speak clearly for 75% or more of the time
- Ability to sit, lift 1-25 lbs, carry 1-25 lbs, and push/pull 1-25 lbs for 50% - 75% of the time
- Ability to bend, stoop/kneel/crouch, climb ladder/step-stool, reach overhead, and hear whispered speech for 26% - 50% of the time
- Ability to climb stairs, lift 25-50 lbs, carry 25-50 lbs, push/pull 25-50 lbs, and operate a Motor Vehicle for 10% - 25% of the time
- Ability to work in wet/slippery areas and around chemical solutions for 10% - 25% of the time
- Ability to work in a variable shift schedule including every other weekend and holidays
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure
- Ability to effectively reach consensus with a diverse population with differing needs
- Ability to work with patients and/or family members who may be experiencing multiple different emotions
- Ability to respond quickly to codes, traumas, rapid responses, and maneuver in tight quarters
- Ability to manage multiple patient types including confused, combative, upset, intubated, restrained, psychiatric emergency services, traumatized, and nonresponsive individuals
- Ability to accurately select the correct patient and assign an encounter number
- Ability to register all patients for laboratory services as ordered by their physician and in compliance with St. Charles Health System policies and procedures
- Ability to select the correct insurance plan, send and review eligibility responses, and research tests and diagnostic codes according to billing and insurance requirements
- Ability to inform patients regarding expenses beyond insurance reimbursement and allow them to make decisions regarding lab services
- Ability to have a clear understanding of all downtime processes
- Ability to think critically, multitask, and maintain accuracy during periods of frequent interruptions
- Ability to navigate and prioritize specimen collections using the Lab Information System
- Ability to perform POC testing, including CLIA waived testing, moderate complexity testing and QC
- Ability to navigate through multiple complex computer systems to find MD orders, update, and verify patient information
- Ability to research billing questions, place orders, and meet regulatory requirements for Medicare and other payers
- Ability to facilitate the distribution of results via fax, phone, or delivery
- Ability to conduct all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality
- Ability to comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Ability to act in an ethical and appropriate manner
- Ability to report known or suspected violation of applicable rules
- Ability to cooperate fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings
- Ability to greet clients upon arrival at the outpatient draw station or area
- Ability to greet patients appropriately according to Hospital surroundings, situation, and time of day
- Ability to assist the RN and MD as requested in the collection of blood samples and during specialty procedures
- Ability to perform Adrenal Study blood collections
- Ability to perform MRI pediatric blood collections
- Ability to perform Lumbar Puncture blood collection
- Ability to perform Bone Marrow collections
- Ability to perform Legal blood collection with law enforcement
- Ability to perform Arterial blood collection
- Ability to perform AHA BLS when asked to participate in the rotation by an RN or MD
Desired Qualifications
- Participation in college level science classes
- Phlebotomy certification through a St. Charles Health System approved accredited agency (ASCP, NCA, NCPT, or phlebotomy specific military training programs)
- Previous direct patient care experience (preferably Lab experience)
- College science background
- Strong team working and collaborative skills
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to demonstrate excellent customer service skills
- Ability to complete an in-depth sign off sheet related to processes and procedures performed by the phlebotomist
- Ability to prioritize requests for procedures according to urgency of need and type of tests ordered
- Ability to train and mentor effectively using constructive feedback after meeting competency and experience requirements
- Ability to support Lean principles of continuous improvement
- Ability to function as a champion of change
